At Sarah and Sébastien’s: A terrace like a cocoon

Sarah and Sébastien, married for 7 years, are passionate about architecture, decoration and interior design. Unable to find the rare pearl in the typical houses in their area near Calais, they opted for a construction project that began in 2021.

A crush born on Instagram, through the projects of Angélique and Jean-Baptiste, and Audrey and Patric, in which it was easy for Sarah to project herself.

“We had hesitated with the Cubikcollection, but the photos of these projects tipped the balance in favor of Portland. We really don’t regret ordering our siding from ORSOL. “

They wanted a cozy outdoor space, and imagined an in-ground terrace where the Portland ORSOL collection found its place.

We preferred to start with a blank page and write our story.

explains Sébastien.

“We wanted a warm, cocooning corner where we could gather as a family, with our two daughters, or enjoy convivial moments with friends,” says Sarah. A crush born on Instagram, through the projects of Angélique and Jean-Baptiste, and Audrey and Patric, in which it was easy for Sarah to project herself.

To highlight the beauty of the cladding, Sarah added LED strips, which bring out the reliefs at dusk and make for cosy, warm evenings. Exterior landscaping has been meticulously designed. Potted trees, as seen here, and tastefully selected wooden furniture bring out the natural look of the cladding.

A terrace that attracts guests

As with most of the work on their self-built home, Sarah and Sébastien installed the ORSOL Portland siding themselves. ” Sébastien was in charge of the installation; it took him a good day, not counting the slab wall caps. It was very quick and easy! The rather large format of the sheet cladding makes it easy for even a small DIY enthusiast to install ,” says Sarah.

She adds: “We couldn’t be happier with our choice of Portland ORSOL cladding: it’s the rendering we wanted in terms of shade, nuances, relief… We’re really enjoying this underground living room, because we’re there so often. Guests even move more naturally towards the buried living room than towards the terrace!”

Our collections of jointed facings can be installed over ETI.

What is ETI and what are its advantages?

External thermal insulation (ETI) improves your home’s energy efficiency by reducing heat loss. It protects walls, reduces thermal bridges and improves interior comfort. What’s more, it enhances the value of your property and contributes to significant energy savings.

The possibilities

Which ETI materials can be used?

Characteristics of polystyrene foam ETI installation

  • Cladding with a maximum mass per unit area of 40 kg/m².
  • Maximuminstallation height of 12 m
  • Maximum altitude 900 m
  • ETI fixed to traditional supports (concrete, masonry, etc.) excluding timber-frame construction(1)

The bonded installation process for ORSOL jointed facings on expanded polystyrene ITE is registered with the CSTB under number ATEx 2941_v1, with ZOLPAN as the applicant. Access the document here.

For other ORSOL facings bonded to EPS, a prior technical study is required to obtain a specification specific to the site in question.

  • Maximum installation height of 3 m
  • Maximum altitude 900 m
  • ETI fixed to traditional supports (concrete, masonry, etc.) excluding timber-frame construction(1)

Bonded installation of ORSOL facings on wood fiber ETI is currently under development.

How is it laid?

The first stages of installation are identical to those for a plaster finish. The number of fixing plugs is determined according to the same calculation rules.

Installation steps :

1. Gluing and wedging of insulation panels.

2. Application of the reinforced base coat: application of a first coat of base plaster with the reinforcement hammered in.

3. Reinforcement of mechanical fastening by additional dowelling through the reinforced base layer, followed by application of a second coat of base plaster.

5. Once the plaster has dried, the facings can be double-glued.

  • 1. Concrete / masonry wall
    • 2. Bonding/sealing compound
      • 3. Insulating panel
        • 4. Mechanical dowel
          • 5. Reinforced base coat
            • 5.1 Coating
            • 5.2 Fiberglass reinforcement
            • 5.3 Mechanical anchor
            • 5.4 Coating
              • 6. Adhesive mortar

An ambitious project in Chalette-sur-Loing

A social landlord attached to the Loiret department, LogemLoiret is active in both large towns and more rural areas, with both multi-family and single-family projects. In Chalette-sur-Loing, north of Montargis, a former school has given way to sixty homes in three buildings.

The genesis of the project

Nathalie Uro explains the genesis of the project: “The town council wanted to have collective housing and density, but also retail outlets on the building front, in continuity with the town center”. It was the proposal by architects VACONSIN MAZAUD and ATELIER POINVILLE that caught LogemLoiret‘s eye. The organization wanted to place a strong emphasis on architectural quality, in order to break the stereotype of social housing.

The excellence of ORSOL Meulière cladding

“It was a question of a quality program, bringing the charm ofORSOL ‘s Meulière cladding to the various materials present in this project, such as wood and zinc. “For an even more modern look, we opted for a natural shade, which was not in the catalog, and which was custom-made for this project, which includes 200 m² of cladding.

Quality landscaping

“What we wanted was landscaping. Each first floor benefits from a piece of land, or a small garden. The same goes for the communal areas. We wanted to give tenants a natural feel, for a better quality of life. ORSOL cladding is a perfect example of this.

Successfully integrated into the town center

These three buildings have found their place in the heart of the city, and blend in perfectly with their surroundings thanks to different materials such as stone cladding. Xavier Launay concludes: “The Meulière en ton naturelcollection, specially ordered for this project, has been unanimously acclaimed! LogemLoiret employees, local councillors and tenants alike are very satisfied with the result, both in terms of quality and aesthetics.

In the heart of the Causse de Gramat lies a typical village. Here, Fanny and Philippe have made an important decision. They chose to build a house, not just to live in. This place represents a real return to their roots for them. This project marks their return to their native region. It also illustrates their commitment to preserving the environment. What’s more, they’re enhancing the local heritage through this project.

The first steps towards a new beginning

It all began in 2020, when Fanny inherited her mother’s property. Rather than sell, the couple chose to build. They built a vacation home on the land. It will eventually become their retirement home. What did they want? A house that blends into the local landscape while respecting the architectural traditions of the region.

A project designed with ecology and heritage in mind

To carry out this project, they called on Emilie Wattier, an architect from the Arkhidea agency. Arkhidea. Well aware of the site’s requirements, especially its proximity to a listed Romanesque church, Wattier proposed an innovative design. He designed three separate buildings. These include a garage and two living areas.

Choice of materials: back to basics with ORSOL

Fanny and Philippe opted for stone cladding from the Causse natural tone from ORSOL, chosen for their ability to blend harmoniously into the ecosystem and for their aesthetic appeal, reminiscent of the region’s traditional buildings. This choice proved to be a perfect harmony between modernity and tradition, where even the garage stands out for its use of burnt wood, an ideal complement to the stone. Fanny explains, “We wanted a house that blended in as much as possible with theecosystem and reflected our attachment to old stone. ”

The interior: a fusion of tradition and modernity

Inside, the mix of natural materials continues. The industrial staircase in the living room and the glass roof separating the living room from the kitchen provide a modern contrast. Meanwhile, earthy colors and materials such as linen, jute and travertine add a touch of softness and naturalness.

Project challenges and successes

The construction encountered several challenges, not least because of strict heritage conservation requirements. However, despite these obstacles, the final result surpassed all expectations. Fanny exclaims, “We’re delighted with the final rendering of the Orsol siding, which is beautiful and very close to traditional buildings!”

Fanny and Philippe’s project is an eloquent example. It shows how sustainability and local traditions can be harmoniously integrated. What’s more, this project perfectly illustrates ORSOL’s role. ORSOL helps make sustainable building dreams come true. These buildings remain rooted in the region’s culture and history.
