There are several techniques for recreating the natural look of stone to add character to a facade. Among them, stone-effect stucco and cladding are two common approaches, each with very different applications. Installation, cost, appearance, and durability: these are the key factors to consider when making your choice.
Stone-effect plaster and cladding: two ways to finish a facade
Although their appearances may sometimes seem similar, these two techniques have very little in common.
What is stone-effect stucco?
Stone-effect plaster is applied directly to the facade. It is applied to the substrate and then shaped while it is still wet. The contractor can mark the joints, outline the stones, and carve the material.
What is wall cladding?
The installation process for wall cladding works differently. Each pre-fabricated piece already has its own texture, shape, and color variations. At ORSOL, the cladding is made of NeoMineral and can be installed stone by stone, in panels, or on a mesh framework. Preparation and installation vary depending on the product, with or without visible joints.
From installation to finish: two ways to bring stone to life
Stone-effect plaster offers great freedom: the visible size of the stones, the depth of the joints, a smooth or more rustic look… On the other hand, two different applications can yield very different results, and the realism depends heavily on the quality of the workmanship.
With cladding, the final look is better controlled. The volumes, textures, and nuances immediately lend depth to the facade. The various collections thus allow youto explore a range of architectural styles: dry stone, rock, schist, cut stone, or more traditional masonry patterns.
The difference also lies in the installation conditions. Plaster is applied and then worked on site, whereas cladding requires careful preparation of the substrate, as well as proper layout and adhesive application.
Cladding and stucco can also be combined on the same facade to play on material contrasts and highlight certain architectural features.
To compare prices: look at the entire project
Comparing only the price per square meter can be misleading. For stone-effect render, the budget includes the product, but also:
- Surface preparation;
- application;
- sculpting or engraving;
- and finishing touches.
The complexity of the work and the labor involved can therefore cause the price listed on the estimate to vary significantly. Estimates often range from 65 to 95 €/m², including materials and installation*.
When it comes to siding, it’s also important to consider the total cost:
- the product itself;
- installation products;
- wall preparation;
- corner treatment;
- any joints;
- and labor.
The price of ORSOL Neomineral stone wall cladding can range from €50 to €100 per square meter (including tax) for the cladding alone, depending on the collection.
Durability: It All Depends on the Application
For stone-effect plaster, durability depends in particular on the substrate, its preparation, the product used, and the application conditions. There is no single lifespan that applies to all systems. The NF DTU 26.1 standard governs mortar coating work, but specific performance characteristics must be verified in the documentation for the product in question.
For ORSOL cladding, installation is based on specific guidelines, the IDEAPOSE process, and a CSTB Technical Approval for its intended use. ORSOL also provides a 10-year product warranty, subject to compliance with installation requirements. For exterior applications, the application of a water-repellent treatment is also recommended as part of maintenance procedures to maximize the facade’s longevity.
Ultimately, the choice depends on the substrate, the desired appearance, the overall budget, and the site constraints. When exterior thermal insulation is present, for example, compatibility must be assessed. Certain ORSOL cladding collections can therefore be installed over exterior thermal insulation under certain conditions.
