The 3 Main Differences Between Stone-Look Stucco and Stone Siding

Inspiration 24 Sep 2026

There are several techniques for recreating the natural look of stone to add character to a facade. Among them, stone-effect stucco and cladding are two common approaches, each with very different applications. Installation, cost, appearance, and durability: these are the key factors to consider when making your choice.

Stone-effect plaster and cladding: two ways to finish a facade

Although their appearances may sometimes seem similar, these two techniques have very little in common.

What is stone-effect stucco?

Stone-effect plaster is applied directly to the facade. It is applied to the substrate and then shaped while it is still wet. The contractor can mark the joints, outline the stones, and carve the material.

What is wall cladding?

The installation process for wall cladding works differently. Each pre-fabricated piece already has its own texture, shape, and color variations. At ORSOL, the cladding is made of NeoMineral and can be installed stone by stone, in panels, or on a mesh framework. Preparation and installation vary depending on the product, with or without visible joints.

From installation to finish: two ways to bring stone to life

Stone-effect plaster offers great freedom: the visible size of the stones, the depth of the joints, a smooth or more rustic look… On the other hand, two different applications can yield very different results, and the realism depends heavily on the quality of the workmanship.

With cladding, the final look is better controlled. The volumes, textures, and nuances immediately lend depth to the facade. The various collections thus allow youto explore a range of architectural styles: dry stone, rock, schist, cut stone, or more traditional masonry patterns.

The difference also lies in the installation conditions. Plaster is applied and then worked on site, whereas cladding requires careful preparation of the substrate, as well as proper layout and adhesive application.

Cladding and stucco can also be combined on the same facade to play on material contrasts and highlight certain architectural features.

To compare prices: look at the entire project

Comparing only the price per square meter can be misleading. For stone-effect render, the budget includes the product, but also:

  • Surface preparation;
  • application;
  • sculpting or engraving;
  • and finishing touches.

The complexity of the work and the labor involved can therefore cause the price listed on the estimate to vary significantly. Estimates often range from 65 to 95 €/m², including materials and installation*.

When it comes to siding, it’s also important to consider the total cost:

  • the product itself;
  • installation products;
  • wall preparation;
  • corner treatment;
  • any joints;
  • and labor.

The price of ORSOL Neomineral stone wall cladding can range from €50 to €100 per square meter (including tax) for the cladding alone, depending on the collection.

Durability: It All Depends on the Application

For stone-effect plaster, durability depends in particular on the substrate, its preparation, the product used, and the application conditions. There is no single lifespan that applies to all systems. The NF DTU 26.1 standard governs mortar coating work, but specific performance characteristics must be verified in the documentation for the product in question.

For ORSOL cladding, installation is based on specific guidelines, the IDEAPOSE process, and a CSTB Technical Approval for its intended use. ORSOL also provides a 10-year product warranty, subject to compliance with installation requirements. For exterior applications, the application of a water-repellent treatment is also recommended as part of maintenance procedures to maximize the facade’s longevity.

Ultimately, the choice depends on the substrate, the desired appearance, the overall budget, and the site constraints. When exterior thermal insulation is present, for example, compatibility must be assessed. Certain ORSOL cladding collections can therefore be installed over exterior thermal insulation under certain conditions.

Blending the charm of historic architecture with the elegance of contemporary design is a common challenge in renovation projects. When they purchased an old farmhouse, Alicia and Erwan successfully rose to this challenge. To enhance their living spaces and highlight the original architectural elements, they chose ORSOL reconstituted stone cladding , Granit collection aged. Let’s take a look back at a successful project where authenticity and modernity come together in perfect harmony.

A renovation project inspired by the charm of the existing structure

In September 2023, Alicia and Erwan became the owners of their farmhouse. Although the house was immediately move-in ready, the couple wanted to infuse it with their own style while preserving its character.

Plans include: repainting, refinishing the floors, and, most importantly, opening up the kitchen to the living room to create a bright and inviting space.

In this new open-concept space, one standout feature captures everyone’s attention: an imposing granite fireplace, surrounded by magnificent exposed beams. To harmonize the decor and echo this heritage, the idea of refinishing the stone comes naturally.

From a love of natural stone to discovering ORSOL

Initially leaning toward classic natural stone, Alicia and Erwan explored various options before discovering ORSOL’s “Aged Granite” collection in a beige shade.

This collection quickly established itself as the ideal solution for their home:

  • A perfect aesthetic echo: The grainy texture and pronounced relief of the facing echo the characterful stone of their fireplace.
  • A successful visual transition: The beige tone adds a touch of softness and helps define the space, naturally separating the very modern kitchen from the living room with its warm atmosphere.
  • A technical challenge successfully overcome: The thinness of the cladding panels makes it possible to cover a wall without losing valuable space or adding weight to the structure.

A professional installation for a look that’s more lifelike than life itself

To bring their cladding wall to life, Alicia and Erwan entrusted the project to the company Espace Vert Design. This choice proved to be crucial in achieving a flawless result.

The installation was carried out by Espace Vert Design, and the result is quite impressive! The more we saw the work progress, the more satisfied we became. We don’t regret hiring a professional, because the finished wall looks so realistic. Sometimes people even ask us if it was the original wall.

Thanks to the precision of the jointing and the craftsman’s expertise, the facing blends in so naturally that it seems as though it has always been part of the building.

Modern Pool House: Ideas and Materials for a Contemporary Outdoor Space

Inspiration 24 Jul 2026

A true extension dedicated to relaxation and socializing, the modern pool house has established itself as the centerpiece of a high-end outdoor space. A true extension of the pool, this contemporary outdoor addition shapes the landscape, enhances the pool, and extends those moments of togetherness as soon as the warm weather arrives.

1. Why choose a modern pool house?

Designing a modern pool house means placing just as much importance on outdoor comfort as on interior design. Designed as a living space in its own right by the pool, it typically features a summer kitchen, an outdoor seating area, a changing room, and even a utility area with plumbing facilities.

It’s also the ideal spot to install a convenient and refreshing outdoor shower, perfect for rinsing off before or after a swim while keeping the water clean.

2. The Key Materials for a Contemporary Exterior

The secret to a successful poolside design lies in the harmony and contrast of textures. Several materials complement each other perfectly:

  • Large glass openings: Aluminum sliding doors and glass roofs let in natural light and offer a direct panoramic view of the pool and the patio.
  • Concrete: Whether left unfinished or polished, it adds a trendy industrial and mineral-inspired look to floors, pool decks, and countertops.
  • Wood: Used for siding, soffits, or trellises, it adds warmth to the overall design and creates a cozy contrast around the outdoor shower and relaxation area.
  • Metal: Found in pergola frames, dark woodwork, and outdoor shower fixtures, it accentuates the structure with dark, elegant accents.

3. Enhance the structure with ORSOL stone cladding

Amid these modern materials, stone provides the authenticity and texture needed to break up the monotony of smooth surfaces. Incorporating ORSOLstone cladding on exterior facades, the back wall of an outdoor shower, or the back wall of a pool house creates a striking contrast with stainless steel, glass, and metal.

Thanks to the thin profile of Néominéral stone cladding, it can be easily installed on any type of exterior substrate (concrete, cinder blocks, cement panels), transforming a simple structure into a distinctive feature that is fully resistant to frost, UV rays, and water splashes.

4. Inspiration and Styles: Which ORSOL Collection Should You Choose?

Depending on the atmosphere you’re looking to create for your contemporary pool area and pool house, ORSOL offers tailored design solutions:

  • Cladding with geometric patterns: Their horizontal lines enhance the sleek, modern look of the architecture. They pair perfectly with polished concrete, glass, and black aluminum to adorn a bar area or the wall of an outdoor shower. Choose from ORSOL collections such as STRATA or PORTLAND

  • Rough-hewn or dry-stone-style stones: For a “contemporary farmhouse” style, combining the charm of rough-hewn stone with the bluish reflections of the pool and large floor-to-ceiling windows creates a perfect balance between tradition and modernity. Choose from the ORSOL collections, such as CAUSSE or TERTUS.

💡 Good to know: Creating harmony between the pool, outdoor shower, and pool house. To achieve a perfectly harmonious look around the pool, consider echoing the texture or color on the wall section where your outdoor shower is located. A water-repellent treatment applied after installation will provide long-lasting protection for the stone; reapply every 5 years.

Designing a modern pool house means creating a true haven of well-being around the pool. By combining wood, metal, concrete, and large glass openings with the quality of ORSOL stone cladding—while incorporating practical features such as an outdoor shower—you give your garden a distinctive architectural signature that is warm and decidedly contemporary.

How do you design a summer kitchen using facing stone?

Inspiration 24 Jul 2026

A true extension of the home during the warmer months, the summer kitchen has become an essential part of the outdoor lifestyle. Whether it’s located by a pool, under a pergola, or on a covered patio, the choice of materials is essential for combining aesthetics, comfort, and durability. To add character and charm to this living space, a summer kitchen built with stone cladding is a sure bet.

1. Why choose stone siding for your outdoor kitchen?

Enhancing an outdoor space requires surfacing materials that can withstand the elements while providing a polished finish. Engineered stone offers the authentic charm of natural stone while ensuring easy installation and excellent resistance to both freezing temperatures and UV rays.

When used on a bar, a backsplash, or an entire wall, stone cladding in a summer kitchen helps visually anchor the structure within its natural surroundings. It creates an elegant contrast with modern elements such as the stainless steel of a plancha, the raw wood of a countertop, or polished concrete.

2. Planning the Layout: Key Areas and Functionality

To successfully design your outdoor kitchen, you should organize the space around three main areas:

  • The cooking area: barbecue , pizza oven, or plancha.
  • The food prep and washing area: a spacious countertop and sink.
  • The social area: counter , bar, or central island.

The use of Néominéral ORSOL cladding, which is easy to install, helps create a visually harmonious look for the entire structure. Thanks to their slim profile, these cladding panels easily cover structures made of concrete blocks or exterior drywall, transforming a simple framework into a genuine masonry structure with a high-end finish. Explore our full range of stone cladding collections to find the one that will perfectly complement your summer kitchen.

3. Enhance and protect your walls with the ORSOL signature

An outdoor kitchen is naturally exposed to the elements, as well as to splatters of grease and liquids from grilling and meal preparation. To preserve the original appearance and beauty of your ORSOL facing stones throughout the seasons, two key steps are strongly recommended (see our installation and maintenance guide for full details):

1. Applying a water- and oil-repellent treatment: Once installation and grouting are complete (and after the surface has dried thoroughly), apply an invisible protective product specifically designed for ORSOL stone. The dual-action water-repellent (moisture/freeze protection) and oil-repellent (grease stain protection) properties prevent liquids from penetrating the material without altering its natural appearance or breathability.

2. Easy daily cleaning: Thanks to the pre-treatment, maintenance is very easy. Simply wiping the backsplash or bar with a soft sponge dampened with warm water and a mild soap (such as black soap or dish soap) is enough to quickly remove fresh stains.

Pro tip: Strictly avoid acidic cleaners, harsh solvents, and high-pressure washers used at too close a distance, as these could damage the protective surface and the patina of the cladding.

4. Inspiration and Styles: An ORSOL Collection for Every Project

The choice of cladding immediately sets the tone for your outdoor dining area. Depending on the look you want to create for your space, ORSOL offers a wide range of textures and colors.

Traditional Style: The Authentic Charm of Rubble Stone and Cut Stone

For a summer kitchen with the feel of a bastide, a Provençal farmhouse, or a country home, look for collections with pronounced textures and irregular shapes.

  • Aesthetics: Choose from the CAUSSE, ROCA, or TERTUS collections
  • The ideal application: perfect for cladding a traditional pizza oven, the frame of a large barbecue, or an entire wall facing the garden. When paired with rough-hewn wooden beams or canal tiles, these collections create an authentic and timeless look, featuring the pronounced textures and exposed joints characteristic of dry stone masonry.

Contemporary style: the elegant simplicity of slim planks

If you prefer a modern, minimalist, and architectural aesthetic, the tile collections are perfect for you.

  • Aesthetics: Choose from the PORTLAND, STRATA, or ROCKY MOUNTAIN collections
  • The perfect application: These finishes are ideal for covering a modern kitchen island, a bar counter, or a sleek backsplash. They pair perfectly with stainless steel appliances, a polished concrete countertop, or black aluminum structures in the style of a bioclimatic pergola.

When Causse ORSOL cladding makes its debut at a 5-star amusement park in Périgord

In 2018, Patrice Pauly decided to start from scratch. After a busy career and numerous trips around the world, he embarked on an ambitious project: to create an exceptional place in the Dordogne, far removed from the restrictive norms of traditional hospitality. A luxury lodging experience that is free-spirited, warm, and true to his vision.

And so Escapades en Périgord was born, with the opening of its first two luxury vacation rentals in Eymet and Monbazillac. Then, in 2022, after four years of construction, the project took on a new dimension: Le Domaine des Hauts de Rouquette, a 5-star residential resort, opened its doors in Eymet with three lodges and an annex. Each accommodation features a private pool, sauna, steam room, and spa for the duration of the stay.

A prestigious venue in a designated historic site

The Domaine des Hauts de Rouquette does more than simply offer exceptional comfort: it is located within a designated historic site, subject to the requirements of the Architecte des Bâtiments de France. This setting demands materials that are worthy of the location, which naturally led Patrice to choose ORSOL.

“I wanted a luxurious yet natural touch both indoors and outdoors. Given the many vacation rentals in the area, we wanted to stand out with a high-quality finish, and the Causse cladding evokes the stone found in the vineyards right next door. ”
— Patrice Pauly, founder of Escapades en Périgord

Causse ORSOL Wall Cladding: The Elegance of ORSOL Stone

To create a warm, contemporary contrast between the spaces, Patrice chose to combine two premium materials: wood and Causse d’ORSOL siding in a natural finish. This blend of textures defines the visual identity of each lodge, both inside and out.

The ORSOL Neomineral cladding, approved by the Architecte des Bâtiments de France, offers the visual authenticity of natural Quercy stone combined with the advantages of a lightweight, durable, and certified solution. Its mineral appearance and natural stone color blend seamlessly into the Périgord landscape, evoking the low vineyard walls that line the estate.

Each lodge has its own decorative style, but they all share the same design elements: the same floor area, a similar layout, and the same stone exterior, which invites guests to return and discover a different atmosphere with each stay.

Installation entrusted to a trusted local craftsman

The work was carried out by Xavier Grezel, a mason and roofer based in Saint-Agne (Lot-et-Garonne), whom Patrice trusts for the quality of his work and the care he takes with every detail of the installation.

“I am very pleased with the Causse collection from ORSOL, and I would like to thank our mason, Xavier Grezel of Maçons Couvreurs, for the installation.”

A loyalty that has lasted for more than 10 years

This isn’t Patrice’s first project with ORSOL. More than ten years ago, he used ORSOL products to clad his own home. This renewed trust has led to an ongoing project for the future: cladding a well on the estate’s grounds, again using the Causse collection.

Contemporary house & Cubik ORSOL siding: Charlène and Benoît’s testimonial

On the arrival of their second child, Charlène and Benoît, content creators and entrepreneurs based on the outskirts of Tours, decided to take the plunge and leave renting behind to build the house of their dreams. It’s a project born of an observation shared by many families in the wake of the health crisis.

Accompanied by their master builder friend, they acquired a plot of land at the end of a hamlet to design a contemporary house built around light and family life.

Architecture centered on the living area

The heart of the house is the large living room, open to the outside world: large bay windows, a ceiling height of almost five meters, and the generous volume of an existing renovated farmhouse. A space bathed in natural light throughout the day.

For the adjacent volumes: offices, bedrooms (etc.) the project manager directed the couple towards a solution that was both aesthetically pleasing and durable for cladding their exterior facade: sheet cladding.

ORSOL Neomineral sheet cladding: contemporary meets authentic

To create a visual coherence with the low stone wall delimiting the plot, the choice fell on ORSOL Neomineral cladding slabs from the Cubik collection in a natural tone. This exterior cladding is in keeping with the resolutely modern spirit of the building, while recalling the natural materials of the site.

“We’re getting great feedback on our house in general, but especially on the choice of ORSOL siding. We’ll never get tired of it.”

Neominéral cladding panels offer the authentic look of natural stone, without the weight or installation constraints of traditional materials. Weather-resistant, lightweight and easy to install, they are one of the most popular solutions forexterior facade cladding, both for new-build and renovation projects.

ORSOL sheet cladding: far beyond the façade

Although Charlène and Benoît chose Neomineral Cubik cladding panels for their exterior facades, the collection can be adapted to many other areas of the home.

For projects integrating a terrace, ORSOL’s sheet cladding for terrace walls is ideal for extending the aesthetic unity of the exterior right through to the relaxation area. Cubik’s natural mineral appearance creates a perfect visual continuity between the façade of the house and the outdoor features.

Feedback that speaks for itself

Used to sharing their daily lives with their community on social networks, the couple’s feedback on their home is unanimous, and the exterior cladding is often the first topic of conversation.

“We’re getting great feedback on our house in general, but especially on the choice of ORSOL siding. We’ll never get tired of it.”

Proof that a well-chosen material, in this case ORSOL stone cladding panels, guarantees lasting aesthetic satisfaction, long after the job has been completed.

Consider ORSOL sheet cladding for your project

Whether you’re building or renovating, ORSOL Neomineral cladding panels can be adapted to every style and every space: exterior facades, terrace walls, pool surrounds, outdoor landscaping. Available in a range of shades and formats, ORSOL cladding panels let you personalize your home while guaranteeing long-term durability and aesthetic appeal.

Stone cladding in the bathroom: reconciling aesthetics and waterproofing

Inspiration 24 Apr 2026
Gite et chambre d’hôte dans le Périgord (Eymet) façade en parement en pierre collection CAUSSE ORSOL

Installing stone cladding in a bathroom creates a natural, soothing ambience. This decorative choice adds character to your wellness area, but water vapor requires special precautions. Careful preparation and appropriate protection guarantee the long-term beauty of this mineral decor. The ORSOL collections are elegantly at home in any room. These coverings are ideal for interiors, especially wet rooms, provided a few installation rules are followed.

Preparing walls against infiltration

A healthy wall guarantees long-lasting installation. Walls receive an anti-moisture treatment before the tiles are bonded. Applying waterproofing under tiles insulates fragile materials such as plaster. This barrier protects the building’s structure from shower splashes. In addition, the use of a bonding primer reinforces the stone’s hold and blocks rising damp.

Laying with suitable products

Application requires mortars designed for damp environments. A flexible adhesive absorbs substrate movement caused by temperature changes. This type of fixing ensures perfect hold of wall elements behind a bathtub or washbasin. Double gluing eliminates air bubbles and prevents liquid stagnation. Last but not least, water-repellent joints ensure a totally hermetic and healthy barrier.

Apply a protective water-repellent treatment

Waterproofing protects porous textures from damage. This protective product penetrates the stone and repels water without changing its visual appearance. Generous application saturates splash-prone surfaces. This invisible shield lets the material breathe while preventing stains and mildew. It also facilitates cleaning by limiting limescale deposits.

Maintain and ventilate

Regular maintenance preserves the beauty of the mineral decor. A simple microfiber cloth and neutral soap are all you need to clean the walls. Forget acidic or scouring products. An efficient ventilation system (VMC) evacuates steam after each shower. This rapid renewal of air protects the joints and reliefs of the stone. These simple gestures will prolong the life of your stone wall covering.

In short, the success of stone cladding in a bathroom depends on the combination of aesthetics and technology. High-quality materials and controlled waterproofing avoid problems associated with humidity. With these precautions, stone retains its lustre and unique texture for many years to come. This architectural choice guarantees a healthy, solid and elegant interior.
